Hi; new to the forum so apologies in advance for being clueless.

Massive thanks in advance to anyone who can try to help with my problem!

I've had this laptop just over a year and had no problems until recently, when I restored the machine to factory settings on the advice of a friend who works in IT (I'd had some problems, possibly AVG-related and couldn't boot up at all). No other changes have been made to hardware or software - in other words it's the same setup that's worked fine up until now.

At first (for 48 hours or so) everything seemed fine. Then, for several days after restoring the settings the laptop would boot to Windows but freeze up completely 2-3 minutes later and I had to power off and try again; I tried changing power usage and sleep / hibernate settings but the outcome was the same again and again and the amount of time before it froze wasn't sufficient for me to download updates or drives in case that is the problem. Once it froze I got no response from CTRL+ALT+Delete but if I C/A/D before the freeze I get a black screen (only the pointer visible) for 30 seconds, then an error message box saying "Logon process has failed to create the security options dialog - Failure - security options".

Finally I left the laptop on overnight to boot windows normally, since I'd noticed on occasion one or two functions did seem to be working, just extremely slowly. Now I have BSOD w/ messages and can't enter Safe Mode (the computer restarts and offers me Startup Repair and Boot Normally, both of which lead to the BSOD). The blue screen comes with an error message, sometimes 'This application has failed to start because user32.dll was not found' and the rest of the time 'This application has failed to start because basesrv was not found' .

A few days ago I ran a boot test (diagnostics) at startup and got the following:

[Memory - March U Test]
ErrorCode 0123
Error Code 2000-0123 Memory integrity test failed

Error Code 3600:0749
AC_Adapter_Invalid AC Adapter detected

I haven't physically touched the RAM or any other internals and the AC adapter is the one that came with the laptop, which I've been using without any problems for over a year.

Again, any help would be much appreciated.

The specs are:

Dell Inspiron 1545

Hi everyone.
I'm hoping someone can help me. I have a Toshiba laptop, 60GB.
My E: drive is showing up as critically full 1.06GB free of 54.4GB.
I presume this is backup files. I haven't got a clue how to access these files even if I needed them, or how to clear old ones I don't need.
If I go into Computer, and click on drive E it shows 4 randomly named empty folder, one TAG file which I have no idea wht it is (1KB), one VLC video (.bin)1KB and a Quickbooks backup (accounting software) of 5,051KB.

I'd appreciate any advice. Thanks

Hi there - this is my first post. Please be kind if my question is a stupid one because I know very little about how a computer works. All I want is one that does, and in the past I've left the technical stuff to others that know more than me.

My computer (bought from Aldi just over 3 years ago) is working at the minute but I'm concerned that a problem could be looming as for the last couple of days I've only been able to switch it on after switching it off for the night by turning the power supply off and on again. Rightly or wrongly ever since I've had the computer (just over 3 years) I've rarely switched it off at the plug, but now it will not power up until I've unplugged it.

Does anyone know why this might be - it's only since the last update was installed and by co-incidence the same thing has started to occur with several of the computers at work. Could it be anything to do with the last Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 8 for Windows Vista (KB980182)

Thanks

Hi there, to anyone who can help!
Firstly, I am not all that qualified on computers. My problem is that I cannot copy or burn using my DVD RAM & DVD ROM drives. Message comes up stating "Insert disc into drive" even though clean discs have been inserted. I've gone into the drive properties and both drives show discs are full. I have tried the discs in a friend's computer, and they show empty and have recorded on them. I have recorded on a CD, and in the properties it shows the useage space. I have gone into driver update wizard, and they state best drivers found in use, and this device is working properly. I have gone into hardware and the DVD region shows the correct code. I have played a DVD film and in RAM it was fine, but in ROM, the picture was fine but sound was jerkey. I need to copy personal items on a[/size] DVD to display on TV. as some relations do'nt have a computer. Any suggestions!! Hope someone can help. Regards, Al

Hi guys,

My name is Pete and I am from the UK

I have a question about something that happened recently.

My machine setup was
Motherboard - MSI K9MM-V
Memory - 2GB ram stick (DDRII 800 SDRAM) (I also have 2 x 1GB DDRII 667 SDRAM which I had in the system before I got the 2GB 800 stick) (I know these are all working)
CPU - athlon sempron 3800+

About a month ago my machine kept resetting now and then randomly. Just before it reset I would hear a fast higher pitched whirl then resest. So I would let it reset and it would go for a random amount of time, it didn't matter whether I was playing a game like cod4 or just regular surfing it would do it.

Then it started to stop at post with an error something like - your last attempt at overclocking failed etc.

Now I thought something was wrong with my cpu overheating. I read somewhere that the motherboard was the problem and it was causing the CPU to overclock. I decided to keep going and see what happened. Then after about 5/6 times doing it it would reset and then blank screen. But all the fans inside the tower were going, dvd rom would open and close and agp gfx card would light up and fans on it spinning.

So I bought an ASROCK - AM2NF3-VSTA motherboard(because I figured since it had 2 xIDE and 2 X sata ports I could use my existing hardware with it easy enough)
Also it said that it could take 4 x DDRII DIMM slots (no mention of SDRAM but I figured DDRII was the same (I'm thinking this could be the problem which i'll get to later)

I installed the basics onto the new motherboard. It just did the same as the K9MM-V motherboard did. Wouldn't go to post but all fans going and agp card lighting up etc.

So I figured it was the CPU that had gone. So I bought a new one. athlon 64 3200+. Installed that but the same thing happened, no post just all going.

Then something made me think it was my 450w power supply, maybe somehow there was power but not enough to send the cpu to post (god knows lol)

So then I took apart the power supply(after leaving it for an hour) and there was dust everywhere inside (2 years old). (what I should have done was try the new cpu with the K9MM-V but I didn't)

So, der lol, I chucked it in the bin and then a few days later went to buy a power supply. I installed that with the new motherboard and the new cpu but same thing happened. fans spinning etc etc. I was scratching my head.

So I decided to try the old K9MM-V and old sempron 3800+ with the 2gb ram stick and viola it went to post and loaded up.

So I was scratching my head a lot thinking 'Eh!! does this mean that my old memory is not compatible with my new motherboard?'

So here I am, I spent enough on new parts (which is no big deal because I can always use them as testers in future or build another system out of the olds) but don't really wanna splash out on new memory if the old will suffice. I don't know if the new motherboard is faulty or not.

In the K9MM-V manual it says
Memory Support
DDRII 400/533/667/800 SDRAM (2 GB Max)
2 DDRII DIMM slots (240-pin/ non ECC)

In the AM2NF3-VSTA it says
4 x DDRII DIMM slots
Support DDRII 800/667/533

So basically is the memory the problem? The new motherboard manual says nothing about SDRAM,

Please help, if my post is too long I apologise, I just figured to give all the information so it saves people asking what system etc etc.

Thanks in advance

Hi everyone,

This is a long post but I feel you need a little background.

I made a website for a friend a few years back and offered to do this for free. I didn't have a clue about how to make one but nor did I want to use a simple website creator to make yet another generic typical website, so I decided to learn HTML and a little script and PHP and do my own from scratch.

I have a background in programming which I had as a past hobby so I thought it wouldnt be that difficult.

This friend is onto some very interesting research and I wanted to help him get this out to the public as best as possible. It took me a good three months to finally have a complete working website with several pages, and paypal integration for purchase of books etc.

The problem is after just over two years it has never had a high ranking on google. The topic doesnt help either because it's about King Arthur, but my website is way out there into the 300th listing if I simply type in King Arthur without quotes, but as there are over 20million hits I suppose thats not really bad is it?

Anyway, I made this entire website with only HTML (tiny bit of javascript) and its probably not optimized as I only knew the basics of optimization. I registered it with a couple of sites claiming to hit up the google rankings. I havent used google adwords or advertising.

I have used descriptive meta tags and I did a fair bit of research into these so I dont think thats a problem. The problem is simply HTML and lots of tables apparently dont score high on google.

Anyway, fast forward to the current problem.

This friend (more like a colleague) is old and is becoming desperate to advertise his research. So he hired a professional web designer to do a thorough marketing job. I was initially told this guy would be making the site I made have a high google ranking. This is not the case.

I was originally given by my friend/colleague typed text by himself about history to put on the website. I reshuffled this text into a more website friendly manner to make it more palatable. I scanned images from his books to accompany the text to make the site more pleasing. So although most of the text is actually belonging to my friend/colleage who has written several books, I myself am the one spending all the many hundreds of hours making this website in the first place.

This new computer guy has spotted an opportunity and has went and copied ALL text and ALL images from my website and pasted them EXACTLY the same on his own. He has obviously done this to save the time in reshuffling the text like I did.

He has even copied the design of the site I made, similar menu layout etc.

Now we have a situation where there are two websites on the internet with exact same text. He tells me this will severely damage google ratings and has the cheek to insist I take my text down!

He copied all this without asking me even though I copyrighted all this website in my own name.

Now he is offering his client (my friend/colleague who is desperate) to market this new website only, and is expecting me to give my site over to him exclusively.

I spent a long time with this site and stupidly I volunteered without payment for it, thinking I was doing the decent thing - although I do have a certain percentage of online sales, but as its ranked poorly in google, I havent made much.

This guy knows a heck of a lot more than I do about internet design, its his job. However, he is hounding me with domain transfer requests for the entire domain over to his new site.

So in a nutshell he has copied my text, images, and site layout, and telling me that I must transfer over the domain. He insists that two websites with same text will REALLY hurt google rankings. I have given a simple solution, namely remove the text he copied from my website and paste up his own using the original typed text I myself was given from my friend/colleague. He still insists.

My friend is in his mid 70s and desperate to have his work shared with a greater audience which is only natural. So far he has backed me up in keeping the original website, but I fear this new guy will do his best to convince him to have me transfer over the domain.

I will not do this and that would mean a major falling out with my friend if this happens.

This guy has from the beginning wanted me to transfer over the entire domain, as well as the password for the paypal account so he can make necessary ammendments for his shopping cart. He wanted the paypal account permanently. I obviously told him NO and again was backed by my friend.

This is a bizarre situation and because I dont have the technical expertise I feel helpless to convince my friend there is something wrong here. This guy has offered to do this new website, as well as others which includes a solid months work for only £400! I know from ringing and obtaining several quotes that this would normally cost into the thousands to achieve the same.

Obviously my "friend" must be thinking of striking a deal with this guy because of his better expertise, and desperation, as well as because no great online presence has been achieved by myself.

That was a very long winded explanation of my situation but the background is needed.

1)
I guess exact website content will be a problem, but will two websites with similar content SEVERELY hurt google rankings - especially if he reshuffles the text?

2)
Why should he need my entire domain be transferred over to him?

3)
Can I somehow convert my eight page HTML website to make it more ranked with google?

Thanks very much if you got this far into the post!
Our compatible print toners are all DIN tested and ISO approved.
We guarantee your printer and the toner used against faults.
We have certification that proves this from all manufacturers; including Hewlett Packard, Brother, Dell, Epson etc.
We currently save 1000’s of Schools, College and Hospitals 1000’s of pounds with our quality products.
There are already many other products on the market that claim to be compatibles.
Most are false advertisements; which include second hand faulty parts that have no guarantee and are extremely poor quality.

Our products are all tested individually against the Original Manufactured products.
Every item we sell must at least equal the Original product in page yield, Ink quality, hue and even build quality. However, as many of our products are later editions to that of the original release, our products often exceed the expected limitations.
I would only use it to watch some DVDs, play a bit of music and surf the web so to make it run smoother I thought about installing Ubuntu on it. I don't really know where to start and don't know if the wireless internet will still work. I'm using a wireless PC card.
I tried to format C, didn't work because some process is still using some volume, when I tried to force it it didn't work either.
