Removing Cmdow from Win 2000
I ran Norton Antivirus on my machine and it comes up with a security risk Cmdow. To remove it Norton tells me to start the system in safe mode and run the scan and follow the instructions. It tells me after running the scan that I should visit Norton's website where it gives me the same instructions as before.

Anybody know how to remove this from my system. It is located in C:\windows\taskmgr\run.exe

To boot windows into safe mode, you will need to press F8 whilst Windows is booting. This will bring up a menu for you to enter safe mode. If you can run Norton in safe mode, do so, and it should solve the problem.

RE: Removing Cmdow from Win 2000
I actually did reboot in safe mode and ran a scan. Then I was told to visit the symantec web site which I did entered the virus name and was given the instructions to update my virus definitions reboot in safe mode and follow the instructions. After updating the definitions and rebooting in safe mode and running the scan, I was told to visit the symantec (useless) web site for instructions. Here I was given exactly the same instructiions but also given the number of a paid for expert to call if this was not successful.
My arguement is what is the point of purchasing USELESS symantec software if it does not do the job.

RE: Removing Cmdow from Win 2000
Try getting the free version of AVG scanner, and either Zone Alarm or Comodo Firewall. Uninstall Norton, install these and see if AVG will pick it up. These are the best free alternatives to Norton, and work well. It will also probably help you machine, as they use less resources than a Norton install.

Disconnect your computer from the net when you have uninstalled Norton, and only re-connect it when you have installed AVG and the firewall option you choose. You must uninstall, then install a new version as you cannot have two versions running at the same time.

Thanks very much for the advice. As it has been suggested by numerous persons to do exactly what you say it sounds like it might be the thing to do.
Cheers
